Gao Xiaowu (b.1976), China

City Dreams

Sculpture, Bronze, 2013
Location:  The Interlace Level 1, Singapore

“Floating” amidst the greenery are five balloon-shaped figures that make up this charming work. Whether male or female, in smart business suit or casual garb, these bloated individuals have only tiny wings that fly them to their dreams. What dreams? For the artist, “as a youth in the village, my dreams were of the city; as an adult in the city, my dreams are of the village”.  Will they make it?

Artist’s Biography

Gao Xiaowu studied sculpture in Xiamen Art Academy and Central Academy of Fine Arts. His signature tongue-in-cheek sculptures examining urban aspirations and ideals, inspired by his observation of China’s rapid social transformation, have earned him attention, commendations and international recognition.
