Ascott Raffles Place Singapore

Old Lyrics with New Melody

Painting, Mixed media, 180x430cm
Artist:  Goh Beng Kwan (b.1937), Indonesia - Singapore
Location:  Ascott Raffles Place Singapore Level 1, Singapore

This monumental diptych by Singapore Cultural Medallion recipient Goh Beng Kwan was commissioned as the centrepiece for the lobby of Ascott Raffles Place. Goh took cue from the project of converting the historical art décor office building, formerly known as Asia Insurance Building, into premium serviced residences, to create this piece of abstract work. Executed in his signature mixed-media style, Old Lyrics with New Melody combines layers of rich colours and textures to produce a joyful and well-articulated tune.

Artist’s Biography

Goh Beng Kwan was one of the few artists from Singapore to study art overseas in the 1960s. He was accepted at the Art Students’ League of New York and studied under leading influence on the art of collage, Leo Manso. He returned to Singapore advocating abstract expressionism and forged a reputation as a daring and experimental artist. Goh won many awards including the grand prize of the 1982 UOB Painting of the Year and the Cultural Medallion in 1989.
