The Walk

Sculpture, Bronze, 120x320x30cm , 2012
Artist:  Dirk De Keyzer (b.1958), Belgium
Location:  Westgate Level 1, Singapore

Originally titled in French as La Promenade, this piece by Belgium artist Dirk De Keyzer is one of three works located in the courtyards of Westgate. Capturing and reinterpreting snapshots of our everyday life, De Keyzer’s art is characterised by a subtle humour that makes us smile. This is, in part, achieved by distorting and exaggerating the human figures such that they take on the feel of caricatures. Here, a woman, in a rather stiff posture, is led by her sprightly dog during their walk. Do we sometimes love our pets so much that they drive our lives?

Artist’s Biography

Like many boys of his age, Dirk De Keyzer was initially sent out to learn a craft and destined to work in a factory. But he eventually ended up studying sculpting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Eeklo, Belgium. There, he discovered his passion for the medium of bronze, especially casting by the “lost wax” method. De Keyzer’s sculptures have been exhibited internationally.
